Chennai is an easy city to enjoy without spending. Its best assets, the long seafront, the old temple quarters and a classical-music culture that still treats concerts as a public good, are free by default. This list has 25 things that cost nothing at all, followed by a short section on places that are nearly free. Transport and filter coffee are on you. For free events on specific dates, see our live free events in Chennai page.

Beaches and open spaces
1. Marina Beach. The promenade runs for about six kilometres beside Kamarajar Salai, past the memorials at Anna Square, a line of statues and the lighthouse. Evenings bring food stalls and families; sunrise is quieter and cooler. Swimming is banned. Our Marina Beach guide has the station-by-station detail.
2. Elliot’s Beach. Besant Nagar’s beach is where the neighbourhood walks in the evening. Look for the Karl Schmidt Memorial on the sand and the Ashtalakshmi Temple at the southern end.
3. The Theosophical Society gardens. The society’s headquarters since 1882 sits in about 260 acres of woodland on the Adyar river, with a banyan tree said to be 450 years old. Visitors are admitted only during set hours, so check before you go.
4. Pondy Bazaar’s pedestrian plaza. The widened pavements of Thyagaraya Road in T. Nagar are made for strolling and window-shopping, especially after dark when the lights come on.
5. Pallikaranai marsh. One of the few surviving wetlands inside the city, south of Velachery, with migratory waterbirds in the cooler months. Bring binoculars and go early.
6. A morning with a running group. Chennai’s running clubs meet at dawn on the Marina, in Besant Nagar and elsewhere, and newcomers are welcome at no charge.
Temples, churches and old Madras
7. Kapaleeshwarar Temple. The Shiva temple at the heart of Mylapore, with a 120-foot gopuram of 1906 and a large tank. Walk the four Mada streets afterwards for flower sellers, brassware and, before Navaratri, rows of golu dolls.
8. Parthasarathy Temple. Triplicane’s Vishnu temple is among the oldest in the city and draws its biggest crowds on Vaikunta Ekadasi, which falls on Sunday 20 December 2026.
9. San Thome Basilica. The neo-Gothic cathedral on Santhome High Road is built over the tomb traditionally held to be that of St Thomas the Apostle.
10. Luz Church. A short walk inland, this small Portuguese-era church dates from 1516 and is regarded as the oldest church in the city.
11. St Mary’s Church, Fort St. George. Consecrated in 1680, it is the oldest Anglican church in India. Entry to the fort is free with a photo ID. The Fort Museum next door charges a fee and is closed on Fridays.
12. The Armenian Church. The quiet 18th-century church on Armenian Street in George Town is a reminder of the merchants who once traded here. It is usually open to visitors during the day.
13. St Thomas Mount. Climb the steps to the hilltop shrine for a view across the southern suburbs and the airport.
14. A self-guided walk of the Marina’s landmarks. Start at the Triumph of Labour statue, pass the university buildings and Vivekanandar Illam, the old Ice House, and end at the lighthouse. Guided versions are on our heritage walks page.
Free music, talks and art
15. A concert at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. The Bhavan on East Mada Street presents Carnatic and Hindustani music, dance and discourses on most evenings, and almost all of it is free. Seating is first come, first served.
16. Daytime concerts in the December season. From mid-December to early January, most sabhas keep their morning and early-afternoon slots free, which adds up to hundreds of free concerts. The Music Academy’s 100th Annual Concerts run from 15 December 2026 to 1 January 2027. Our Margazhi season page explains how to plan it.
17. An arangetram. A dancer’s debut recital is often open to the public. They fill sabha halls on weekends through the year.
18. The Anna Centenary Library. The nine-floor public library in Kotturpuram is free to enter and read in, open from 8 am to 8 pm, with a large children’s section. Its Saturday talk series, Ponmalai Pozhudhu, has run for more than 120 sessions.
19. Exhibitions at the Lalit Kala Akademi. The regional centre on Greams Road shows painting, sculpture and photography, generally with free entry.
20. Films and exhibitions at the cultural centres. The Alliance Française of Madras on College Road and the Goethe-Institut at Rutland Gate screen subtitled films and hold exhibitions and talks, many of them free with registration.
21. Mall atrium events and markets. Express Avenue, Phoenix Marketcity and VR Chennai stage free performances and festive displays in their public spaces, and VR Chennai holds a Sunday farmers’ market. Pop-ups are on our flea markets page.
Seasonal freebies
22. Navaratri golu displays. During Navaratri (11–20 October 2026), temples and halls put up large doll displays that anyone can walk in to see.
23. Karthigai Deepam. On the evening of Tuesday 24 November 2026, homes and temples across the city light rows of oil lamps. Mylapore’s streets are the place to see it.
24. Chennai Sangamam at Pongal. The state’s folk-arts festival puts parai drummers, karagattam dancers and other performers on open-air stages in parks and on beaches. In January 2025 it ran at 18 venues from 6 to 9 pm; the 2027 venues had not been announced when we wrote this. Pongal is on 14–17 January 2027. See Pongal events.
25. Madras Week. Around Madras Day on 22 August, volunteers and institutions host heritage walks, talks, exhibitions and quizzes, most of them free. Details are on our Madras Day page.
Two more for the calendar: the Panguni festival processions at the Kapaleeshwarar Temple in March or April, and the turtle walks that conservation volunteers have long run along the beaches on winter nights. Both are free; the second needs advance registration and is seasonal.

Tips for a free day out
- Group by neighbourhood. Mylapore gives you the temple, Luz Church, San Thome, a free concert and the beach within two kilometres. George Town gives you the fort, the High Court’s exterior and the Armenian Church.
- Go early or late. Between 10 am and 4 pm the heat makes walking unpleasant for most of the year.
- Use the MRTS. The line from Chennai Beach to Velachery runs behind the Marina and through Mylapore, and fares are very low.
- Dress for places of worship. Covered shoulders and knees, and footwear you can slip off.
- Carry water and a cap, and an umbrella from October to December.
- Check before you travel for festival events. Venues and timings for Chennai Sangamam and Madras Week are announced close to the dates.
