Chennai's spiritual calendar is built around its old temple quarters. In Mylapore, the Kapaleeshwarar Temple's Panguni festival in MarchβApril culminates in the chariot procession and the Arubathimoovar procession of the 63 Nayanmar saints. In Triplicane, the Parthasarathy Temple draws its largest crowds on Vaikunta Ekadasi, which falls on Sunday 20 December 2026. The Vadapalani Murugan Temple is busiest on Thai Poosam and Panguni Uthiram. During Margazhi, from 16 December to 14 January, groups walk the Mada streets at dawn singing bhajans, and halls host Tiruppavai discourses. Karthigai Deepam on 24 November 2026 fills homes and temples with lamps. San Thome Basilica and the shrine at St Thomas Mount mark the apostle's feast in July, and the Ramakrishna Math in Mylapore and ISKCON's temple on the ECR hold regular programmes.
