Heritage Walks & History Tours in Chennai
Guided heritage walks in Chennai are listed below and refreshed daily. The city is older and more layered than its modern face suggests, and it is best understood on foot, early in the morning. Mylapore is the classic first walk: the Kapaleeshwarar Temple and its tank, the four Mada streets, old agraharam houses, and San Thome Basilica and Luz Church, which dates from 1516. George Town and the Fort are the second. Fort St. George, begun in 1639โ40, holds St Mary's Church of 1680 and the Fort Museum, and the streets beyond it take in the High Court, the Armenian Church and the wholesale bazaars. Triplicane walks centre on the Parthasarathy Temple and the Wallajah mosque; Egmore's on the Indo-Saracenic museum buildings and the railway station; and there are themed trails on Carnatic music history, cinema, trees, food and the Marina's statues. Walks are run by local historians, architects and specialist companies such as Storytrails and Madras Inherited, and by volunteer groups during Madras Week each August, when dozens are offered in a fortnight. Most last two to three hours, start around 6 or 6:30 am, cap numbers and need advance booking. Further out, Mahabalipuram's Pallava monuments are a guided day trip.

Good to know
- Pick the earliest slot. By 9 am the heat and traffic make walking hard for most of the year.
- Dress for temples and churches: shoulders and knees covered, and footwear that slips off easily.
- Carry water, a cap and small change for footwear stands and coffee stops.
- Fort St. George needs a photo ID at the gate, and its museum is closed on Fridays.
- Book ahead. Groups are usually limited to 15โ30 people, and Madras Week walks in August fill quickly.
