Best Live Music & Comedy Venues in Chennai (2026 Guide)
Updated 2026-10-12 · 7 min read · by the chennai2go team
Chennai has two live-entertainment circuits that barely overlap. One is the sabha circuit: air-conditioned auditoria on TTK Road, in T. Nagar and Mylapore that present Carnatic music, classical dance and Tamil theatre all year and go into overdrive in December. The other is everything else: arena concerts of Tamil film and independent music at the YMCA Grounds in Nandanam, stand-up tours at the Sir Mutha Venkatasubba Rao Concert Hall, and a growing set of small rooms for comedy, jamming nights and band gigs. This guide covers both, with addresses, the nearest station and what each venue is best for. For what is on right now, see music events and comedy shows.

The sabhas: Carnatic music and more
A sabha is a members’ cultural society with its own hall. Non-members can buy tickets to most programmes, and a large share of concerts are free.
The Music Academy is the senior institution. Founded in 1928, it has been in its building at the head of TTK Road since the main T. T. Krishnamachari Auditorium, which seats about 1,600, was inaugurated in December 1962. Its December festival is the centre of the music season: the 100th Annual Concerts are listed for 15 December 2026 to 1 January 2027, with season tickets sold online until 10 December and daily tickets from two days before each concert. Outside the season the hall is hired for comedy tours, theatre and orchestral shows, so it turns up in listings all year.
Narada Gana Sabha, a little over a kilometre down TTK Road in Alwarpet, opened its own hall in February 1988. It runs concerts, dance, a veena festival and Tamil plays, and has a first-floor mini hall of about 150 seats for chamber recitals.
In T. Nagar, Vani Mahal on G.N. Chetty Road is the home of Sri Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha, founded in 1944. The rebuilt complex has three halls and is one of the main stages for Tamil theatre. Sri Krishna Gana Sabha on Maharajapuram Santhanam Salai is known for classical dance and holds its Natya Kala Conference each December.
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan on East Mada Street, Mylapore, is the place to start if you have never been to a kutcheri. Most of its programmes are free, seating is first come, first served, and the Kapaleeshwarar Temple is a two-minute walk away.
South of the Adyar, Kalakshetra in Thiruvanmiyur stages dance and music in its Rukmini Arangam and koothambalam. Its Annual Art Festival is listed for 18–27 December 2026, and outside organisers present concerts there too; one October 2026 show was listed from ₹249.
Our Margazhi season guide explains how the December concerts work.
Big concerts: YMCA Nandanam and the indoor stadium
For arena-scale shows, promoters in Chennai have one default: the YMCA Grounds in Nandanam, the playing fields of the YMCA College of Physical Education on Anna Salai. In 2026 it hosted Hiphop Tamizha on 7 March, the closing night of a world tour, and Santhosh Narayanan on 1 August. The ground’s great advantage is transport. Nandanam station on the Blue Line is a short walk from the gate, and Chennai Metro has announced sponsored travel for ticket-holders at some concerts. It is an open field, so expect standing zones, dust in dry weather and mud after rain.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on Sydenhams Road, built in 1995, seats about 8,000 and is the largest covered option. It takes film-music concerts and audio launches when it is not hosting kabaddi or volleyball. Central metro station, where the Blue and Green Lines meet, is a 10–15 minute walk.
Mid-sized shows move around. Phoenix Marketcity in Velachery uses its courtyard for concerts, and resorts and lounges on the East Coast Road host weekend gigs; a lounge at Akkarai had a ticketed music event listed from ₹1,000 in October 2026. Upcoming shows of every size are on our concerts page.
Stand-up comedy: where the tours stop
Chennai’s comedy scene runs in Tamil, English and a mix of the two. Always check the language on the ticket.
The Sir Mutha Venkatasubba Rao Concert Hall is the hall that national tours choose. It stands on the Lady Andal school campus at Shenstone Park, off Harrington Road in Chetpet, was commissioned in 2008 and seats close to 1,200 across stalls and a balcony. English-language theatre, musicals and tribute concerts use it too. Chetpet suburban station is under a kilometre away, and Harrington Road’s restaurants make it easy to eat before a show.
Kamarajar Arangam on Anna Salai, a few minutes from AG-DMS metro, is the other large room. It suits Tamil stand-up specials, light-music orchestras and award shows, and hosts the Chennaiyil Thiruvaiyaru festival during the December season. The Music Academy and Vani Mahal are also hired for comedy tours.
Small rooms: open mics, line-ups and jamming nights
The week-to-week scene lives in rooms of under a hundred seats.
- Medai – The Stage is a black-box space on the third floor of a building in Cooperative Colony, Alwarpet. Mylapore Times reported a capacity of about 75 when it opened in 2021. It hosts stand-up, improv, storytelling and short plays.
- Trinity Studio in Kodambakkam appears in October 2026 listings with stand-up shows at ₹399; one English-language show is rated 16+.
- Kreate by Kraft lists a recurring roast battle from ₹199 (18+) and Tamil jamming nights from ₹299.
- Café open mics rotate between neighbourhoods; recent listings include Mylapore, Anna Nagar and Porur.
These rooms sell out quickly because they are small. Book online, arrive 15 minutes early for unreserved seating, and keep your phone away: comics are trying new material and most rooms ban recording. Our open mic page lists the current week.
Bars with bands
Chennai has fewer live-music bars than Bengaluru or Mumbai, and listings are concentrated in a handful of places. Hard Rock Cafe in Nungambakkam is the most regular: District lists Friday shows at 9 pm, with entry from 8:30 pm and tickets from ₹249, including classic-rock tribute nights and touring indie bands. Entry is restricted to ages 21 and above with a government ID. Hotel bars and ECR lounges add DJ nights and occasional acoustic sets. We list them in our nightlife section.
For jazz, world music and contemporary work, watch the Alliance Française of Madras on College Road, whose Edouard Michelin Auditorium holds about 160, and the Goethe-Institut at Rutland Gate. Many of their concerts are free.

Practical tips
- Plan the last mile. Only Kamarajar Arangam, the YMCA Grounds and the stadiums are within walking distance of the metro. The TTK Road and T. Nagar halls need an auto from Teynampet, Nandanam or Mambalam.
- Chennai Metro runs from about 5 am to 11 pm. For shows ending after 10:30 pm, book a cab.
- Sabha concerts start on time. Latecomers are seated between pieces.
- Rain changes outdoor plans. Between October and December, open-air shows can be postponed at short notice.
- Carry ID for any venue that serves alcohol.
When to go
December and early January are the peak for classical music, with free daytime concerts across the sabhas. Open-air arena concerts are mostly scheduled outside the October–December monsoon. Comedy runs all year, with the most touring shows on weekends. For this week’s line-ups, start with music this weekend.
