About Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore
The Chennai centre of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, the educational and cultural trust founded by K. M. Munshi in 1938, stands on East Mada Street a few steps from the Kapaleeshwarar Temple. Its main hall and mini hall host Carnatic and Hindustani concerts, Bharatanatyam recitals, Tamil plays, harikatha and lectures on most evenings, and the Bhavan is known for keeping the great majority of its programmes free and open to everyone, without tickets or passes. Its annual cultural festival in the weeks before and during the December season is one of the easiest ways to hear established musicians at no cost. The location makes it simple to combine a concert with a walk around the temple tank and dinner in Mylapore.
