Marina Beach runs along Kamarajar Salai with a promenade of about six kilometres from near Fort St. George to Foreshore Estate. It is Chennai's largest free public space: evening crowds, sundal and bajji stalls, statues along the road, the lighthouse, Vivekanandar Illam across the street and the memorials at Anna Square. The Republic Day parade is held here, the Chennai Marathon has started at Napier Bridge, and Kaanum Pongal brings the biggest crowds of the year. Swimming is prohibited because of strong currents. On New Year's Eve the police have closed the beach and Kamarajar Salai in recent years. Three MRTS stations run parallel to the shore.
