Margazhi Music & Dance Season 2026–27 in Chennai
2 events matching right now across Chennai — mostly music (1), comedy (1). 1 is free.
Chennai's December music season, the Margazhi season, peaks between 15 December 2026 and mid-January 2027. The Tamil month of Margazhi runs from 16 December to 14 January, and the Music Academy, the season's anchor institution, lists its 100th Annual Concerts for 15 December 2026 to 1 January 2027, followed by its dance festival in early January. Kalakshetra's Annual Art Festival is listed for 18–27 December. Around those fixed points, dozens of sabhas run their own series of Carnatic vocal and instrumental concerts, Bharatanatyam and other classical dance, harikatha, lecture-demonstrations and Tamil theatre, some starting in late November. The main halls are within a few kilometres of each other: the Music Academy and Narada Gana Sabha on TTK Road, Vani Mahal and Sri Krishna Gana Sabha in T. Nagar, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and the Mylapore sabhas, and Kamarajar Arangam, which hosts the Chennaiyil Thiruvaiyaru festival. The format is generous to newcomers. Most sabhas keep their morning and early-afternoon slots free, and only the evening concerts by senior artistes are ticketed; canteens run by well-known caterers serve tiffin and full meals between concerts. This page lists season concerts, dance recitals and related events as schedules are published.

Good to know
- Start with the free slots. Morning and early-afternoon concerts at most sabhas need no ticket, and they are where younger artistes play.
- The Music Academy sells season tickets online until 10 December and daily tickets from two days before each concert. Other sabhas sell at their counters and through ticketing sites.
- Plan by neighbourhood. TTK Road, T. Nagar and Mylapore are each walkable clusters, but moving between them at 6 pm takes longer than you expect.
- Eat at the sabha canteens. They are open to non-ticket-holders, and lunch between the noon and afternoon concerts is a season ritual.
- Concerts start on time and usually run two to three hours without a break. Sit near an aisle if you may need to leave early.
- December evenings can still bring rain. Carry an umbrella and book autos or cabs ahead for the 9 pm rush.
