Things to do in Thiruvanmiyur

Thiruvanmiyur is home to Kalakshetra, the arts academy founded by Rukmini Devi Arundale in 1936 and recognised by Parliament as an Institute of National Importance. Its seaside campus, in use since 1962, has the Rukmini Arangam and a Kerala-style koothambalam theatre, and stages its Annual Art Festival each December; the 2026 festival is listed for 18–27 December. The campus also runs a weaving and kalamkari craft centre. Around it are the Marundeeswarar Temple, Thiruvanmiyur beach and Valmiki Nagar's quiet streets. This is also where the East Coast Road begins. Thiruvanmiyur MRTS station, on the Velachery line, is roughly 1.5 km from the Kalakshetra gate.
