About Marina Beach
Marina Beach is Chennai's seafront, a sandy shore along the Bay of Bengal with a promenade of about six kilometres beside Kamarajar Salai, from near Fort St. George to Foreshore Estate. Along the road stand the memorials to C. N. Annadurai, M. G. Ramachandran, J. Jayalalithaa and M. Karunanidhi at Anna Square, a line of statues that includes Gandhi and the Triumph of Labour, the lighthouse and, across the road, Vivekanandar Illam. The Republic Day and Independence Day parades are held here, the Chennai Marathon has started from Napier Bridge at its northern end, and Kaanum Pongal in mid-January draws the largest crowds of the year. Bathing is prohibited because of strong undercurrents. Evenings bring food stalls, kite sellers and horse rides.
