About Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Mylapore
The Kapaleeshwarar Temple is the Shiva temple at the centre of Mylapore and the focus of the neighbourhood's festival calendar. The original shrine is thought to have stood on the seashore; the present temple was built around the 17th century, and its 120-foot eastern gopuram dates from 1906. The large tank lies to its west, with a pillared mandapam in the middle that is used for a three-day float festival. The biggest event is the Panguni Peruvizha, held between mid-March and mid-April, when the deities are taken round the four Mada streets on a different mount each day; the chariot procession and the Arubathimoovar procession of the 63 Nayanmar saints on the eighth day draw enormous crowds. The streets around the temple also host the Mylapore Festival each January.
