About Kalaivanar Arangam

Kalaivanar Arangam is the Tamil Nadu government's flagship auditorium, on Wallajah Road between Anna Salai and Chepauk stadium. The site began in 1952 as an assembly building where the state legislature met; an auditorium named after the comedian and actor N. S. Krishnan, known as Kalaivanar, was inaugurated here in 1974. That building was later demolished and replaced by the present air-conditioned multi-storey complex, inaugurated in February 2016, with a main hall of about 1,100 seats and a second hall of about 1,300 on the third floor. The Legislative Assembly sat here during the pandemic in 2020โ€“21. It is used for state award functions, government conventions, film and literary events, school cultural festivals and ticketed music and dance shows.
