About Island Grounds (Theevu Thidal)
Island Grounds, Theevu Thidal in Tamil, is a large open space on a river island in the Cooum, created in the early nineteenth century at the point where Anna Salai begins. It is best known for the India Tourist and Industrial Fair, the 'trade fair' that the Tamil Nadu government has run here since 1975, usually between January and March, with state-department pavilions, rides and food stalls. The ground also takes circuses, consumer exhibitions, political rallies and large concerts, and it stood in for the Chennai Book Fair in 2016. In 2024 the roads around the island formed the Chennai Formula Racing Circuit, which hosted night rounds of the F4 Indian Championship and the Indian Racing League.
