About Cholamandal Artists' Village
Cholamandal Artists' Village at Injambakkam is an artists' commune founded in April 1966 by the painter K. C. S. Paniker with his students and colleagues from the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Madras. They bought land by the sea, built their own homes and studios and supported themselves through craft work, and the village became the base of the Madras Movement, which shaped modern art in South India from the 1950s to the 1980s. Today the site has the Cholamandal Centre for Contemporary Art with its museum of the Madras Movement, two commercial galleries, a sculpture garden, an open-air theatre, an art bookshop and a craft shop. It is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm and hosts exhibitions, artist talks and occasional performances.
