The B. M. Birla Planetarium is the centrepiece of the Periyar Science and Technology Centre, the state-run science campus on Gandhi Mandapam Road in Kotturpuram. Inaugurated on 11 May 1988, the domed theatre seats about 250 after its renovation and runs sky shows daily in English and Tamil at set times. Around it are eight galleries, covering physical science, electronics and communication, energy, life science, innovation, transport, materials science and an international dolls and children's gallery, with more than 500 exhibits between them. The centre is open from 10 am to 5:45 pm on all days except national holidays, and it organises science exhibitions, competitions and holiday programmes for school students, which makes it one of the standard rainy-day outings for families in south Chennai.
