About The Music Academy, Madras
The Music Academy is the best-known institution of Carnatic music and the anchor of Chennai's December season. Founded in 1928, it grew out of a music festival held alongside the 1927 Congress session in Madras. Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone of its building at the head of TTK Road in 1955, and the main T. T. Krishnamachari Auditorium, which seats about 1,600, was inaugurated in December 1962; the smaller Kasturi Srinivasan Hall followed in 1982. Its Sangita Kalanidhi title, awarded since 1929, is the most coveted honour in Carnatic music. The Academy lists its 100th Annual Concerts for 15 December 2026 to 1 January 2027, with a dance festival to follow in January. For the rest of the year the hall hosts theatre, dance, stand-up tours and orchestral concerts.
