About Medai – The Stage
Medai – The Stage is a small black-box performance space on the third floor of a building in Cooperative Colony, Sri Ram Nagar, on the edge of Alwarpet. It opened in late 2021, when the neighbourhood paper Mylapore Times described it as a room for about 75 people, and it has since become one of the regular homes of Chennai's independent scene. The programme is a mix of stand-up comedy in Tamil and English, improv nights, short plays, storytelling, acoustic music and workshops; a comedy room that lists shows under the name Punch – Unpaid Therapist uses the same address. The seating is flexible and close to the performers, which suits trial shows and new work. Medai also runs a venue of the same name in Bengaluru.
