About Elliot's Beach (Besant Nagar Beach)
Elliot's Beach, Bessie to Chennai, is the city's neighbourhood beach: a broad stretch of sand at Besant Nagar, south of the Adyar estuary. Its landmarks are the Karl Schmidt Memorial, built for a Danish sailor who drowned while saving a swimmer, the shrine of Our Lady of Good Health (Annai Velankanni Church) at the northern end and the Ashtalakshmi Temple, built in 1976, to the south. The promenade behind the sand is lined with cafés and food stalls. The beach is used for morning runs, cyclothons, beach clean-ups, yoga sessions and awareness walks; the Chennai Marathon's half marathon has started here, and Chennai Sangamam's folk-arts shows have been staged here at Pongal. Police close it to the public on New Year's Eve.

How do I reach Elliot's Beach by public transport?
There is no railway station close by. Take an MTC bus to Besant Nagar terminus, or an auto from Thiruvanmiyur or Indira Nagar MRTS stations, about 2.5 km away.
Is Elliot's Beach open on New Year's Eve?
In recent years the police have closed Elliot's Beach and Marina Beach on the night of 31 December. Check the Greater Chennai Police advisory for the current year.
