About Alliance Française of Madras
The Alliance Française of Madras is the French cultural centre in Chennai, founded in 1953 and based on College Road in Nungambakkam. Besides French classes, it runs one of the city's most active small-venue programmes. The Edouard Michelin Auditorium, an air-conditioned room for about 160 people with 120 seats and floor cushions at the front, hosts film screenings, plays, jazz and contemporary music, dance, talks and festivals, and it is rented by local theatre and music groups. The centre also has an exhibition gallery, a library and media centre and a café, La Cantine. Many events organised by the Alliance itself, such as its French film festivals, have free entry; shows by outside groups are usually ticketed.
