ECR Weekend Plans: Events & Day Trips on the East Coast Road
11 events matching right now across Chennai — mostly nightlife (3), music (3), dance (2), workshop (1).
The East Coast Road, or ECR, is Chennai's default weekend escape: a coastal highway that starts at Thiruvanmiyur and runs south to Mahabalipuram, about 60 km from the city centre. You can do it as a half-day or a full one. The first stops are close to the city. Cholamandal Artists' Village at Injambakkam, founded in 1966, has a museum of the Madras Movement and is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. Beyond the toll plaza near Uthandi are beach houses, lounges and resorts that host ticketed parties, sundowner gigs and festive events. At Muttukadu, about 25 km out, there is a backwater boathouse and DakshinaChitra, the open-air museum of South Indian houses and crafts, which is closed on Tuesdays. Kovalam (Covelong) has a surf beach and surf schools, and the Madras Crocodile Bank lies a little further south. Mahabalipuram's Pallava monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, are the end of the line, and Tamil Nadu Tourism holds its Indian Dance Festival there each winter; the 2026–27 dates had not been announced when this page was last updated. There is no railway on the ECR, so plans depend on buses, a cab or your own vehicle. This page lists events along the ECR and at Mahabalipuram.

- Leave early. Saturday and Sunday traffic between Thiruvanmiyur and Akkarai builds from 10 am, and the return is slowest between 6 and 9 pm.
- DakshinaChitra is closed on Tuesdays and Cholamandal closes at 5 pm; plan the order of your stops around that.
- Do not swim at unguarded beaches. Currents on this coast are strong, and several beaches have no lifeguards.
- MTC buses run along the ECR from Thiruvanmiyur; routes 109, 588 and 599 pass DakshinaChitra. For evening events, book a cab for the return in advance.
- The stretch beyond Uthandi is tolled; keep FASTag balance or cash ready.
- Carry sunscreen, water and a hat. Most ECR attractions are outdoors.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Mahabalipuram from Chennai?
About 55–60 km south of the city along the East Coast Road, usually 90 minutes to two hours by road depending on traffic.
What are the main stops on the ECR?
Cholamandal Artists' Village at Injambakkam, the beaches and resorts around Akkarai and Uthandi, Muttukadu boathouse, DakshinaChitra, Kovalam beach, the Madras Crocodile Bank and Mahabalipuram.
Can I do the ECR by public transport?
Yes, by bus. MTC buses run along the ECR from Thiruvanmiyur and Adyar, and state buses continue to Mahabalipuram; there is no train. Frequencies drop in the late evening.
When is the Mamallapuram Indian Dance Festival?
It is held each winter, from late December to mid or late January; the 2025–26 edition ran from 21 December to 19 January. Tamil Nadu Tourism had not announced the 2026–27 dates at the time of writing.
Is the ECR good for a rainy-day trip?
Not ideal. Most attractions are outdoors, and the road floods in places during heavy north-east monsoon rain between October and December.
