Deepavali (Diwali) 2026 in Chennai: Events, Shopping & Cracker Rules
4 events matching right now across Chennai โ mostly nightlife (2), workshop (1), festival (1). 1 is free.
Deepavali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, the date in the Tamil Nadu government's public-holiday list. Chennai celebrates it differently from the north. The day begins before dawn with an oil bath, new clothes, sweets and the first crackers, and most of the celebration is over by breakfast; lamps are lit at home again in the evening. For the city's North Indian communities, concentrated in Sowcarpet, the festival runs longer, from Dhanteras on Friday 6 November to Lakshmi Puja on the evening of the 8th. The real public spectacle is the shopping in the two weeks before: T. Nagar's Ranganathan Street, Usman Road and Pondy Bazaar, and the textile streets of Purasawalkam and Washermanpet, stay open late and are packed. Hotels and clubs hold Diwali brunches, card nights and parties on the weekend before, craft bazaars and school melas sell lamps and gifts, and big Tamil films traditionally release for the holiday. On firecrackers, Tamil Nadu has for several years allowed only green crackers, and only between 6 and 7 am and 7 and 8 pm on Deepavali day; the 2026 order had not been published when this page was last updated. This page lists Deepavali events, markets, parties and workshops across Chennai.

Good to know
- Shop T. Nagar on a weekday morning and go by suburban train to Mambalam. In the last week the area is closed to through traffic at times and parking is not realistic.
- Tamil Nadu's cracker window in recent years has been 6โ7 am and 7โ8 pm on Deepavali day, green crackers only. Wait for the 2026 notification before planning anything else.
- Buy crackers only from licensed stalls. Keep a bucket of water and sand nearby, wear cotton, and keep children at arm's length from anything lit.
- Chennai empties out for the holiday. Book outstation bus and train tickets early, and expect heavy traffic on GST Road and at Kilambakkam on the two evenings before.
- Early November is peak north-east monsoon. Have an indoor back-up for any outdoor Diwali event.
