About Museum Theatre, Egmore
The Museum Theatre is Chennai's oldest working playhouse, a red-brick hall of 1896 on the Government Museum campus in Egmore. Sources credit the design to the architect Henry Irwin, in an Italianate style, though the museum's own description calls the building Indo-Saracenic. Inside, about 550 to 600 seats rise in semi-circular tiers around a small pit in front of the stage, which gives it better sightlines and acoustics than most modern halls of its size. The British used it for English plays; today the museum uses it for lectures and workshops and rents it out for theatre. English and Tamil drama groups, school and college productions, classical concerts and small festivals use it through the year, and most shows are ticketed by their organisers.
