The SDAT Tennis Stadium in Nungambakkam is India's best-known tennis venue. Built in 1995 and owned by the Government of Tamil Nadu through the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, it has five hard courts, including a floodlit centre court that seats about 5,800. It hosted the ATP Chennai Open every January from 1997 to 2017, when the tournament moved to Pune. Top-level tennis returned in 2022 with the WTA 250
Evening sessions under lights are the most comfortable; day sessions in Chennai's humidity need a cap, sunscreen and water. Nungambakkam suburban station is the nearest rail stop. From the metro, get off at Thousand Lights and take an auto. Early-round weekday sessions are the easiest to get tickets for, and the outside courts let you watch from a few metres away.
